Event Details
Although
their names were once well known throughout the country, fewer and
fewer people (including Alabamians) are familiar with the U.S. Supreme
Court Justices
appointed from Alabama: John McKinley (served from 1838-1852), John
Archibald Campbell (1852-1861), and Hugo Black (1937-1971). In their
own way, each of these men had a profound influence that can still be
felt. McKinley impacted the institution of the
Court and the day to day workings of the justices; Campbell’s legacy
lay in a theory of constitutional interpretation that continues to find
its way into some of our most contentious social issues; and Hugo
Black’s impact is felt every time any American citizen
raises questions about fundamental rights.
